General  Information

             Plasma Technology Department of the Gas Institute is the sole in the Division on Physical and Technical Problems of Power Engineering NASU, where the plasma research is presented.

             The studying of electric arc plasma properties in air-gas mixes, its interactions with materials, as well as the development and producing of plasma torch systems and plasma spraying machines have begun in the Gas Institute at the end of 60th under the supervision of academician Igor M. Karp. The using as the plasma forming gas of a mix of air with methane or propane-butane instead of inert gases has allowed to increase essentially efficiency and productivity, and also to lower cost of spraying processes due to an additional thermal heating at combustion of organic fuel and presence of molecular components’ products of dissociation. The last one predominates extent of a high-temperature zone in plasma spray of combustion products. The maximal quality of powder coating provides a supersonic flow mode of plasma torch operation. In the beginning of 70th the Gas Institute produced a series of installations for powder coating of the metallurgical equipment’s details of 120 kw. Since 1986 the plasma spraying machine «Kiev-7» of 80 kw were produced. Within more than 35 years experts of the Gas Institute developed also set of updating of the specialized installations for spraying and plasma hardening of machines’ details.

Nowadays in the Plasma Technology Department of the Gas Institute are carried out active basic and applied studying in plasma physics  (Dr. Sci. Victor A. Zhovtyansky, PhD Yuriy I. Lelyukh, PhD Yaroslav V. Tkachenko). The conception of radiation transfer influence on the deviation of the dense plasma from the state of equilibrium is developing sequentially. This effect may be used to energy efficiency improvement in plasma technologies. This problem complexity is predominated by integral interconnection of all elementary volumes in plasma. The using of diffusion approximation is impossible in this problem also.

 The active researches and development of plasma torch systems application in the processes connected to obtain of synthesis-gas, and on improvement of service properties of plasma spray coating are fulfilling (Dr. Sci. Stanislav V. Petrov, PhD Andriy P. Rudoy). One more direction of applied study of plasma is their using in the processes of machines’ details surface modification in glow and low pressure arc discharges in nitrogen and argon-nitrogen mix (Sen. Sci. Volodymyr G. Nazarenko,  Sen. Sci. Volodymyr O. Khomych).

The department has significant experience disposal of hazardous wastes, in particular, pesticides (PhD Volodymyr V. Chetverikov, PhD Svitlana A. Suhorebra). The technology of their gasification in molten salts of alkali metals is realized.

The research is currently carried out in close cooperation with the E.O.Paton Institute for Electric Welding of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine,  Institute of Problems of Electrophysics of Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg), Institute of Plasma Physics of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Prague), Lithuanian Energetic Institute (Kaunas).
